Over the years, Hollywood sci-fi has promised us quite a few cool gadgets — from hoverboards and actual AI robots to flying cars and interplanetary travel. While real-life science is yet to catch up with futuristic Hollywood, a promising new development in brain chip technology is suggesting that the future might just be around the corner.

Elon Musk, our very own real-life Tony Stark, continues to push the limits of technology. His new brain chip startup, Neuralink has enabled a monkey to play a videogame telepathically.

Meet Pager, a 9-year-old macaque monkey, who had a brain chip implanted on each side of his brain about 6 weeks ago. For weeks, Neuralink had been recording and decoding electric signals from his brain in order to model the relationship between patterns of neural activity and his hand movements.

The lengthy research finally culminated in Pager being able to control what’s on-screen using nothing but his mind. In the video posted by the company, the monkey is seen playing a game of pong just by thinking.

While the utopian technology might give gamers goosebumps, its functionality far exceeds the realm of gaming. Elon Musk clarified in a tweet that the technology will be used to enable people with paralysis to use smartphones.

Besides that, the computer chip also aims to cure neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s, spinal cord injury and hopefully someday, fuse mankind with artificial intelligence.

What do you think about Neuralink? Would you volunteer to have a chip placed inside your brain? Or are you concerned about minds getting hacked? Follow us and let us know in the comments section below.
