Drama Ensues In Mrs. Sri Lanka Stage; Former Mrs Sri Lanka Snatches Crown Off The New Winner
These days, beauty pageants and controversies seem to go together like pineapple and pizzas. Nobody likes to see them together, but there they are. From accusations of exploitation and objectification of women to blunders like announcing the wrong winner, pageants never seem to shy away from controversies.
The latest controversy comes from Sri Lanka. In a style that totally resembled Indian soap operas, the former Mrs. Sri Lanka snatched the crown off the new titleholder, falsely claiming that she was a divorcee.
The audiences were left agape as they watched the scene unfold on April 4. Video of the incident shows Pushpika De Silva crowned as the 2021 Mrs. Sri Lanka. Her celebration was short-lived, however, as the former Mrs. Sri Lanka Caroline Jurie took the mic and accused the new winner of being a divorcee.
In a comical fashion, she then marched towards De Silva and proceeded to take the crown off her head in a move that took more than a few moments.
Did anyone witness what just happened at the Mrs World Sri lanka finale!!!— That's why she tweeted ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (@Chocolatte_chip) April 4, 2021
Jurie then puts the crown on the first runner-up, who is crying tears of joy by this point. The two lock into an embrace, in a manner that hints at a close relationship between them.
Later, the plot further thickened as it turned out De Silva isn’t really a divorcee — she is separated from her husband as well as a single mother, but not technically divorced.
The "uncrowning" of Mrs. Sri Lanka was ugly. Whatever political affiliations the winner may have had, the organisers should have known better to verify her marital status instead of @CarolineJurie stripping her off the crown in such a demeaning manner. #LKA #SriLanka pic.twitter.com/K3CoHXrT8J— 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐳𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐭𝐚𝐪 (@munza14) April 5, 2021
Following the shameful debacle, the association of Mrs. Sri Lanka has released a statement condemning the act and declaring De Silva as the rightful winner:
"We are deeply disturbed and sincerely regret the behavior of our current title holder, Mrs. Caroline Jurie, Mrs. World 2020, at the crowning."
It seems the former Mrs. Sri Lanka has lost all credibility in a strange bid to appear falsely righteous. Regardless of her reasoning, do you think she took the right action? Follow us and let us know in the comments section below.
